Men's Volleyball's Wintermeyer Named National, EIVA Hay Player of Week
03/18/08
After an impressive week that featured a starring role in an upset of then-#1 ranked Juniata College, New York University senior middle blocker Jonathan Wintermeyer captured the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National and Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Hay Division Player of the Week awards.
This is the second time Wintermeyer, a 6-6 product of Atascadero, CA, earned the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Week award, with the previous honor being awarded on Jan. 23, 2006. He is the third NYU player this season to collect the weekly accolade, and the 17th overall.
For the week, Wintermeyer hit at a .552 clip while averaging 5.05 points, 3.8 kills and 1.7 blocks per game. Although he never hit below .368 as #3-ranked NYU (16-6, 6-1 EIVA Hay) went 2-1 last week, the senior tri-captain saved his finest performance for a sweep of #1 Juniata on March 16 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In helping the Violets jolt Juniata for the first time since April 6, 2002, Wintermeyer put down 15 kills on 19 errorless swings for a .789 hitting percentage. For good measure, he added six blocks and served two aces.
Earlier in the week, he spiked 11 kills and hit .368 while adding three blocks in a four-game loss to Division II New Jersey Institute of Technology on March 11. Two days later, he hit .500 with 12 kills on 20 attempts in a sweep of Division II and EIVA Hay rival University of New Haven.
A 2007 Second Team AVCA Division III All-American and a three-time EIVA Division III All-Star, Wintermeyer joins junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski and freshman middle blocker as Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week honorees.
